About Ama Ata Aidoo

Ama Ata Aidoo was a 20th-century Ghanaian author, playwright, fiction writer, and poet. She is known for her significant contributions to African literature and holds the distinction of being the first published African female dramatist.

Born on March 23, 1940 in Ghana, Aidoo received widespread recognition for her novel “Changes,” which earned her the prestigious Commonwealth Writers’ Prize in 1992. Additionally, she was honored with the Nelson Mandela Prize for her poetry collection “Someone Talking to Sometime” in 1986.

Her literary journey began at a young age when she decided at fifteen that she wanted to pursue writing as a career. Eager to achieve this goal, she attended Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast and later studied at The University of Ghana in Legon where she honed her skills as a writer. In 1965, Aidoo made her debut as a dramatist with the publication of “The Dilemma of A Ghost.”

In addition to her literary accomplishments, Aidoo served as Ghana’s Minister of Education from 1982 until after eighteen months when she resigned due to challenges achieving her goals.

Her father’s role as Chief Nana Yaw Fama also played an influential part in shaping Aidoo’s writing career; he founded their village’s first school and impacted his daughter’s perspective on education.
