About Alma Flor Ada
Alma Flor Ada is a renowned children’s author born on January 3, 1938, in Cuba. She is known for her exceptional works of children’s literature in both Spanish and English languages. Some of her award-winning books include “Under the Royal Palms,” “The Gold Coin,” and “Gathering the Sun.” In addition to her contributions to children’s literature, she has also published a memoir titled “Vivir en Dos Idiomas” and several novels for adults.
Prior to gaining fame as an author, Ada earned her degree from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and obtained a doctorate from Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru. Her academic pursuits also led her to study at Harvard University on a Fulbright Scholarship.
In terms of professional experience, Alma Flor Ada has taught at the University of San Francisco and Emory University. Personally, she hails from Cuba but later made Northern California her home where she raised four children. Notably, she collaborated with her son Gabriel Zubizarreta on writing projects such as “Love, Amalia” and “Dancing Home.”
