About Alice B. Toklas
Alice B. Toklas was a playwright and member of the avant-garde movement, best known for her intimate relationship with Gertrude Stein. She was born on April 30, 1877 in California and attended school at the University of Washington before opening a literary salon that attracted famous figures such as Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Picasso.
Her relationship with Gertrude Stein was forever immortalized in the lyric line from “Bosom Buddies,” a key song in the popular stage musical “Mame.” In 1954, she published “The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook,” which contained a now-famous recipe for marijuana brownies.
She was raised in a middle-class Jewish family as the daughter of a Polish army officer. Her autobiography, “What Is Remembered,” reflects on her life and concludes with the death of her longtime lover, Gertrude Stein.
