Alice Neel (born January 28, 1900 in Pennsylvania) was a painter known for her emotionally intense portraits that express the inner lives of her subjects.
One of her notable works is the 1935 painting “Alice Neel And John Rothschild In The Bathroom,” which exemplifies the subversive and sexual themes that often appeared in her work.
Prior to gaining recognition as an artist, Neel attended the Philadelphia School of Design for Women to avoid temptation from the opposite sex. She worked a clerical job to support her family and save money for art school.
Neel painted portraits of friends, lovers, Communist Party officials, and complete strangers throughout her career.
Her family had traditional views, with Neel’s mother expressing low expectations due to Alice being born female. The death of Neel’s one-year-old daughter from diphtheria greatly influenced her work.
