About Alice Cogswell
Alice Cogswell (August 31, 1805 – c. August 30, 1830) was an American activist and the inspiration behind the creation of Connecticut’s American School for the Deaf. Born in Connecticut, she lost her hearing due to cerebrospinal meningitis (“spotted fever”) at the age of two. She became one of six original students when the school opened in April 1817.
Statues of her alongside Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet can be found at both the American School for the Deaf and Gallaudet University. Sadly, she passed away just thirteen days after her father’s death.
