About Akiko Yosano

Akiko Yosano, born on December 7th, 1878 in Japan, was a renowned and controversial Japanese poet, writer, feminist, and pacifist who authored between 20,000 to 50,000 poems. She is perhaps best known for her anti-war poem titled “Kimi Shinitamou koto nakare,” which was published during the Russo-Japanese War.

Prior to gaining fame as a poet and writer, Yosano managed her family’s candy business from a young age of eleven. Her birth name was Sho Ho; Akiko Yosano served as her pen name. In 1901 she married literary editor Tekkan Yosano with whom she had thirteen children.
