Meshell Ndegeocello is an American singer-songwriter born on August 29, 1968, in Berlin, Germany. She is known for her significant contribution to the ‘Neo-soul’ movement and has been nominated for ten Grammy Awards.

One of her notable accomplishments includes achieving a no. 1 dance hit with her cover of the Bill Withers song “Who Is He (and What Is He To You?)” in 1996. Before gaining fame, she grew up in Washington D.C., attended Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Oxon Hill High School, and changed her name to Ndegeocello at the age of seventeen.

Ndegeocello played bass on Madonna’s track “I’d Rather Be Your Lover” and also performed a rap within the song. In terms of personal life, she was involved in a long-term relationship with author Rebecca Walker and together they raised Ndegeocello’s son Solomon, who was born in 1989.
