About Abigail Bailey
Abigail Bailey (1746-02-02) was an 18th century woman from the United States who documented her family’s struggle against domestic violence and incest. As a non-fiction author, she authored the Memoirs of Mrs. Abigail Bailey, which detailed how her husband abused one of their daughters. Although she never intended for her writing to be published, it was eventually released posthumously and is considered the first autobiographical account of family violence in the United States.
Prior to gaining notoriety as an author, Bailey and her husband purchased a farm in Landaff, New Hampshire. Her memoir emphasizes her abusive relationship along with expressing trust in God. After 25 years of marriage, she was granted a divorce in 1792 and later moved to Bath, New Hampshire where she resided with her son’s family.
Bailey initially wrote her memoirs for her church community and revealed instances when her husband committed adultery throughout their marriage. She came from a lineage that included Deacon James Abbott as well as had large familial relations: including 17 children – Samuel, Asa, Abigail Caleb, Anna Chloe Amos Olive Phinehas Judith Patience.
