Abby May, born on October 8, 1800 in Boston, Massachusetts, was a notable figure for her marriage to the renowned transcendentalist Amos Bronson Alcott. Despite not receiving formal education, she was tutored by Abigail Allyn and went on to become an influential social worker and activist. Her efforts were particularly focused on advocating for women’s suffrage and the abolition of slavery.
Abby May’s husband and herself founded Fruitlands, a Utopian commune that ultimately did not succeed due to its basis on Amos’ transcendentalist principles. Additionally, Abby May had familial ties to Judge Samuel Sewall who played a role in the Salem witch trials through her mother Dorothy.
