Kathryn Thornton is a physicist and astronaut, born on August 17, 1952 in Montgomery, Alabama. She is renowned for her participation in four NASA spaceflights and later served as Dean of the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Prior to her career as an astronaut, she was awarded with a NATO postdoctoral fellowship. Notably, Thornton was part of the crew on a Space Shuttle Discovery Department of Defense mission.
