Gena Rowlands, born on June 19, 1930 in Madison, Wisconsin is an American movie actress. She gained acclaim for her leading roles in the films A Woman Under the Influence (1974) and Gloria (1980), both of which earned her Academy Award nominations for Best Actress. Rowlands also played the character Allie Calhoun in the romantic drama The Notebook. Prior to her acting career, she studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.

In 1987, her portrayal of the title character in The Betty Ford Story earned her a Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Miniseries. Rowlands was married to director John Cassavetes from 1954 to 1989 and together they had three children.
