Frances Perkins Feet

Frances Perkins, born on April 10, 1880 in Boston, Massachusetts, was an American politician. She made history as the first woman appointed to a U.S. Cabinet position when she served as President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Secretary of Labor from 1933 to 1945.

Perkins earned her graduate degree in economics and sociology at Columbia University before becoming actively involved in labor activism following her service on the committee investigating the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire.

During her twelve years as FDR’s labor secretary, Perkins played a pivotal role in implementing many of his New Deal policies including the establishment of the social security fund. Her contribution led to positive changes for workers across America.

The daughter of a successful businessman who founded what is now known as Butler-Deardon Paper Company, Frances Perkins left an indelible mark on American politics and society during her tenure in public office.
